Where does the future lie for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles?

Will your next car be powered by hydrogen?

Honda, Hyundai and Ford are already at the forefront of the development and production of hydrogen fuelled vehicles with Mercedes beginning a small-scale production of the B-Class fuel cell car in 2010.

Further construction of refueling stations including the addition of hydrogen to normal petrol stations will make owning and driving these green vehicles more practical for the consumer.

Steps will also have be to made to ensure that hydrogen vehicles are more affordable to the average customer, currently hydrogen costs US$6-$8 per gallon with hopes to lower it to US$2-3 by 2015.

A possible future outcome could be generating a dual-fuel system where vehicles can run on either gasoline or hydrogen fuel.  The concept has already been developed and confirmed by scientists and engineers that it is a relatively easy transition and could be a compromise whilst full hydrogen fuel cell cars are being developed at lower costs.

In terms of public transport, hydrogen fuel cell buses are becoming ever prominent with five hydrogen buses joining the London bus fleet this year with hope to gain greater funding from the EU for more.
